Restorative Yoga: The simple act of resting

What is Restorative Yoga?

The word Yoga derives from the work ‘to yolk’ or ‘to unite’. In the context of yoga we unite the mind and the body. Restorative Yoga practice involves staying in poses for longer periods of time (between 3-10 minutes) whilst being in a completely relaxed and supported state, without holding tension in the body. It is founded on the basis that rest is productive rather than other styles of yoga, where you may be constantly moving, flowing and perhaps being busier both physically and mentally. Restorative Yoga is the opposite of this – it encourages us to remain completely still relaxed positions on our mats.

What are the benefits of Restorative Yoga?

There are many benefits to Restorative Yoga. Our primary goal of this style of yoga is simply to ‘let go’. By creating time and space to rest there are many known benefits to our physical and emotional well being which include:

·Reducing muscle tension and tightness

·Improving mood

·Improving sleep quality

·Reducing stress

What do I need for the class?

To allow you to fully relax and be supported in the poses, you will need some simple props that you can find around your home. You do not need to purchase any new equipment.

You will need for the class:

· A bolster/ A large bath towel you can roll up

· 2-3 blankets

· A yoga mat or a soft floor to lie down on

· A small hand towel

· Something to place over your eyes to cover the light. This could be a eye bag or a scarf. To make your experience as relaxing as can be, you may wish to make your space quiet, warm and dark. Wearing something loose fitting, comfortable and warm (jumper and fluffy socks are great) can also be great. I will send a playlist if you wish to have music for your practice, however practicing in silence can be really relaxing depending on your home environment.
